"An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Apples are the second most popular fruit, the first being oranges. Pectin, a soluble fiber that prevents cholesterol buildup in the lining of blood vessel walls is healthy for the body. There are also insoluble fibers that help cleanse and move food through the digestive system. It is much healthier for one to eat an apple with the skin, for 50% of the apple's vitamin C is located directly under the skin. An apple is 25% volume air, which is explains why an apple floats.
During Colonial times, apples were called "winter bananas". Archeologists have traced apples back to 6500 BC. A fact many are unaware of is that apples are part of the rose family, but unlike roses, these apples are available year round. In the United States, half of apple production comes from Washington State.
