Born as a site specializing in lightning fast searches, Google has grown to become behemoth web portal now featuring dozens of online services. Many of the services were made possible after Google became a public company. Their stock soared which gave them a tremendous amount of spending capital. Google now makes a profit off their advertising network Adsense. Now that they've proven themselves, the big question is: Can they survive? Will Microsoft once again beat out all competition?
As unlikely as it seems, Google poses a big threat to Microsoft. Even though Google does not offer you an operating system, they offer more I even realized. If you've ever used a gmail account, you'll realize that the compose feature looks like a stripped down version of Microsoft Office. What would happen if Google offered an application similar to Microsoft Office for free or even per use charge? Currently, the new user price of just Microsoft Word costs $229. Would users who only occasionally use Word pay $229 or try another similar service for free or pay a per use basis?
The ever innovating Google has many services on the line that are sure to excite web users globally. But everything hinges on the fact that they can still be a profitable company. Only time will tell.
